English Language Preparation Courses
This Certificate is awarded by the New Zealand Institute of Studies
Students may start on any Monday of the year. Early enrolment is advised as places are limited. Minimum period of study is four weeks.
Students who enrol in these programmes with a student permit must be enrolled full time for the total programme.
Students on a Visitor’s Visa/Permit; Working Holiday Visa/permit may also enrol in this programme but may not enrol for more than 12 weeks. These students may enrol part time.
Students who enrol for more than 12 weeks must have a Student Visa/permit.
This school is an adult campus and students under 15 years of age will not be accepted. Students aged 15 years will be accepted by special approval of the Principal.
Students who enrol for this General English Programme have the opportunity to transfer to Business English, TOEIC or IELTS classes during their course of studies. These classes may be part time only.
On completion of each six weeks of study, students are able to reselect the programme they wish to enter.
In the final week of each six week period students are tested with level tests to see how progress is being made. At the end of each quarter an ‘activities’ week is held and students visit suitable outside organisations to practice English and see places of interest. All students are expected to participate.
At the end of each quarter all students in this programme are issued with formal written reports to indicate their progress. This includes their attendance performance. These documents may be required by NZ Immigration in the event the student wishes to extend his/her Student Visa/Permit. Attendance of 80% overall is a condition of the Student Visa/Permit.
At the end of a six week programme in the specialist classes students return to the General English programme at the appropriate level of English language ability. Students are advised of opportunities to transfer at regular intervals.

Each course is a six week part time programme. Students complete a variety of exercises which will assist them in their future studies. Students are also able to sit appropriate practice tests
This Certificate is awarded by the New Zealand Institute of Studies.
To gain entry students should have an intermediate level of English language.
There are eight courses per year. Contact Reception for starting dates. These programmes will only run if the minimum number of students per class is enrolled.
An additional programme may be offered from time to time for students already enrolled in the school in the General English programme.
Academic English
This programme is offered twice a year [January – February and June – July] prior to the tertiary enrolment period. This class is especially for students who have completed a tertiary qualification in their own country and wish to apply for tertiary studies in New Zealand.
This course assists the students to develop the study skills required to study in a New Zealand tertiary institution. This includes:
§ Reading for academic purposes
§ writing academic assignments
§ Research skills including using an academic library
§ Participation in tutorials
§ Taking notes as well as skimming and scanning techniques
§ Rules for referencing and non acceptable practices – cheating and plagiarism
During this programme students are able to access information about entry requirements and courses available to suit their individual needs available at a variety of tertiary institutions.
Students in the General English programme will be advised when this class is being established. Eligible students will be interviewed and if accepted will be transferred to this class
